A cron expression is a string of five space-separated fields (minute, hour, day of month, month, day of week) that defines a recurring schedule. For example, "0 9 * * 1-5" means run at 9:00 AM every weekday (Monday to Friday).
Minute (0-59), Hour (0-23), Day of Month (1-31), Month (1-12), and Day of Week (0-7 where 0 and 7 are Sunday). An asterisk (*) means "every" possible value for that field. Step values like */5 mean "every 5" of that unit.
Use the expression "*/5 * * * *". The */5 in the minute field means "every 5 minutes." You can select this from the "Every 5 minutes" preset in the tool.
When both fields contain values (not *), cron runs the job when EITHER condition matches. For example, "0 0 1 * 1" runs on the 1st of every month AND every Monday.
Every minute: "* * * * *". Every hour: "0 * * * *". Daily at midnight: "0 0 * * *". Every Monday at 9 AM: "0 9 * * 1". First day of every month: "0 0 1 * *". Every weekday at 6 PM: "0 18 * * 1-5". Every 15 minutes: "*/15 * * * *".
Standard cron uses five fields and has a minimum resolution of one minute. Some implementations (like Quartz) support a sixth field for seconds, but standard Unix cron does not. For sub-minute scheduling, consider systemd timers or a dedicated task runner.
Asterisk (*) means "every". Comma (,) separates a list of values (e.g., "1,3,5"). Hyphen (-) defines a range (e.g., "1-5"). Step (/) with */n means "every n" (e.g., "*/10" in minute means every 10 minutes). L and W are non-standard extensions used in some implementations like Quartz.
